Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was an Indian aerospace scientist who served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. He was born and raised in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, and studied physics and aerospace engineering.

Who was Kalam?

Kalam was born to a poor family in Rameswaram. His father, Abdul Kalam Alam, was an economist who owned a store selling sweets in the town. Kalam’s only means of education was during his holidays from school, which was spent on books, especially science books. However, he had a strong passion for flying and loved rocket science books, which inspired his later interest in science and technology. When he was in school, he was often teased by his peers for his love of books, but later learned to use his charm and intelligence to win their respect. After enrolling in 1957, he chose a career in aeronautical engineering at Alagappa Engineering College in Chennai, where he earned a BTech degree.

What did he do?

After completing his studies, he joined the Indian Air Force and became a fighter pilot in 1966. In 1972, he graduated from the Defence Services Staff College, in Wellington, New Zealand. He later became a professor at the Armament Research and Development Establishment. During his tenure as the President, his address on the occasion of Republic Day was attended by thousands of schoolchildren. In 2007, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan for his service to the nation. His achievements: The nuclear-powered ballistic missile Defence Systems Kalam’s development of the Agni-V (AV) — a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) — in the 1990s, was one of his greatest achievements.

Why is he famous?

He was an outstanding scientist who made a major contribution to India’s space and missile programs. He was an Indian aerospace scientist who served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. He was the President of the Indian National Congress (INC) during 1985-87 and of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from 1998 to 1999. He also served as the first Chairman of the National Defence Academy (India) in 1988. He was instrumental in the development of India’s first fully home-made liquid fuel rocket (Kalam-1), which carried an object of up to 100kg into space, and was the first Indian to have a long-term vision for space applications in the country’s civil aviation and defence sector. He also advocated for the promotion of technological self-sufficiency in the country’s space program.
